The Little Terns (Sternula albifrons) are migratory birds that choose Portugal to nest during the warmest months of the year.
They are relatively common and identifiable, either by their “somewhat messy flight” or by the noise that a colony produce.
Because they nest in inaccessible places, or due to human intervention (where salt marshes were flooded during the nesting season, making entire colonies unviable), 3 years have passed and I have not been able to carry out an idea that I had had in mind for some time.
It was essential to find a colony that would allow me to develop structured work, where the animals would be comfortable and without signs of stress.
We are the only species on the face of the planet that consciously has the ability to shape the environment it occupies for its own benefit, where the result, without fail, is the destruction of habitats. We are selfish by nature!
The mark we leave on the planet is notorious and indelible!
The impact of our presence should make us reflect. It would be important to take a closer look at where we step and how we step. However, this “42” size footprint, which left its mark on the damp soil of an abandoned salt mine, created something more than a footprint, a shelter, a more welcoming place to generate a new “family”.
For me, these should be the only “ecological footprints”.
This is some of the results of about 15 days of work with these beautiful birds and their surroundings.

As Chilretas ou Andorinhas-do-mar-anã (Sternula albifrons) são aves migradoras, que escolhem Portugal para nidificar durante os meses mais quentes do ano.
São relativamente comuns e identificáveis, seja pelo seu “voar meio atabalhoado”, ou pelo barulho que uma colónia é capaz de produzir.
Por nidificarem em locais inacessíveis, ou por intervenção humana (onde salinas eram alagadas em plena época de nidificação, inviabilizando colónias inteiras), passaram 3 anos e não consegui levar a cabo uma ideia que já tinha em mente há algum tempo.
Era fundamental encontrar uma colónia que me permitisse desenvolver um trabalho estruturado, onde os animais estivessem confortáveis e sem sinais de stress.
Somos a única espécie à face do planeta que conscientemente possui a capacidade de moldar o meio que ocupa para seu proveito, onde o resultado, impreterivelmente, é a destruição de habitats. Somos egoístas por natureza!
A marca que deixamos no planeta é notória e indelével!
O impacto da nossa presença deveria fazer-nos refletir. Seria importante olhar com atenção onde pisamos e como pisamos. Contudo, este “42”, que deixou a sua marca no solo humedecido de uma salina abandonada, criou algo mais que uma pegada, um abrigo, um lugar mais acolhedor para gerar uma nova “família”.
Para mim, estas deveriam ser as únicas “pegadas ecológicas”.
Este é algum do resultado do trabalho de cerca de 15 dias com estas belas aves e o seu meio envolvente.
